Natural Home Remedies for Fading Acne Scars

Treatments for fading scars can be very expensive, not to mention sometimes they can do more harm than good. That's because when you're dealing with harsh ingredients, there's very little room for error. Natural ingredients on the other hand, work just as well, if not better than chemical-laden products but with less risk and are usually inexpensive.

If you're looking for natural home remedies for fading scars, here are a few ideas:

1. Cucumber

The cucumber peel is packed full of vitamin K, which helps activate proteins for bone maintenance, and its alkaloid content promotes cell growth. Vitamin K also helps the blood form clots, which will help not just in the growth of the skin but in the immediate repair as well. Blend only the cucumber peel until it becomes a paste and apply on the affected area. If you have a juicer, cucumber juice can also work as a serum that you can leave on your face to help heal damage from sun exposure.

2. Lime Juice

Full of vitamin C, lime juice acts as a natural bleach which helps lighten new scars and blemishes. The citric acid in lime also cleans out your pores, resulting in a brighter complexion. Vitamin C is essential for healing because it synthesizes collagen, which is responsible for the treatment of superficial scars.

Extract the juice from 1 lime and set it aside. Keep the rest for later, to be rubbed gently on the affected area. Apply the juice on the scarred area and let it dry.

3. Sandalwood

Sandalwood is one of nature’s most versatile skin treatments. As a natural scar treatment, sandalwood’s healing properties are favored for fading scars because it is non-abrasive, natural and inexpensive. It is a popular ingredient in cosmetics, perfumes, soaps and make-up, except those products often come with preservatives and chemicals.

Sandalwood also contains anti-microbial and cicatrizant properties that soothe the skin, as well as blemishes and age spots. Combine with water or other liquids such as witch hazel, milk or honey before applying to the affected area.

4. Apple Cider Vinegar

One of apple cider vinegar’s key attributes is exfoliation. Exfoliating regularly and gently helps keep the skin vibrant and youthful. Scrubbing is not the only way to exfoliate; another way is to “digest” dead skin cells, which is what apple cider vinegar does. Once the scarring is partly healed, apply apple cider vinegar sparingly to encourage cell turnover.

5. Grapeseed Oil

High quality grape seed oil is great not just for cooking but for cosmetic purposes as well. Rich in polyphenol, grape seed oil protects the skin from ultraviolet radiation and enhances skin cell growth. When scarring is present, sun exposure should be kept minimal to avoid further damage. Grape seed oil will help keep the skin moist, creating a good environment for healing and repair. 

Massage a 1 tbsp. of grape seed oil onto the affected area. This will soften the scar tissue without clogging the pores. After 3-5 minutes, apply steam to the face by positioning yourself 18-20 inches away from the water source. Do this for 2-3 minutes and then gently pat your face dry with a towel.
